Three ways to boost your Immunity

This year in particular, we are all searching for ways to boost our immunity in preparation for winter. Whilst many people will be reaching for the multi-vitamins, we are firm believers that the best way to improve your immune system is by nourishing your body naturally.

Yes, vitamins and minerals can help your body fight off diseases, but the best way to get them is through natural sources. Instead of eating to satisfy your hunger, think about eating to nourish your body.

Eat a Rainbow

Want to ensure that you are getting a multitude of vitamins and minerals? Eat a large array of different coloured fruit and vegetables. Ideally with every meal! In fact many vitamins and minerals needs other vitamins and minerals to be broken down and absorbed. For example, the amount of iron your body absorbs when eaten is greatly increased when it is paired with Vitamin C. So next time try squeezing some fresh lemon juice into your bowl of greens to really boost that iron absorption.

Don’t forget to try and add in some oily fish to your diet. They are high in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, which may help to prevent heart disease and are good source of vitamin D. You can easily add these to your diet – we sell a range of sustainably caught tinned sardines at Scoop.

Eat Fermented Foods

It may come as a surprise to some of you that the bacteria that live in your gut have a significant impact on your immune system. These millions of good bacteria boost your immunity by fighting off any bad bacteria.

Due to their high probiotic content, fermented foods can give your immune system a boost. They also reduce your risk of infections like the common cold. Consuming probiotic-rich foods may also help you recover faster when you’re sick.

Fermented foods are also rich in vitamin C, iron, and zinc — all of which are proven to contribute to a stronger immune system

A tablespoon a day is approximately all you’ll need. We stock lots of natural fermented and cultured foods, at Scoop, from Bath Culture House. Choose from Turmeric & Ginger or Seaweed Sauerkraut, Kimchi and even Kimchi ketchup.

Kombucha is also another fermented product that is packed full of gut-friendly probiotics. You only need is a shot or two a day!

Spices can help too!

When added to meals in small amounts on a regular basis they can help to boost your immunity by fighting off viruses, infections and inflammation. They may seem small but you watch their mighty powers!

Some top of the list options are turmeric, ginger, cayenne pepper, garlic and cinnamon.

Don’t forget to EAT YOUR GREENS

There is no doubt that one of the best ways to nourish your body is by consuming lots of healthy green veggies.

They are great in helping your immune system strengthen itself, reduce inflammation in your body and improve heart health on a daily basis.
